Castro & the Candidates.

OK, Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz has stepped down.  No complaints here.

The days of this cigar chomping tin-pot dictator are officially over.  Unofficially his legacy will continue until his death of course.  This will most likely happen during the next President’s (whomever that may be) tenure in office.  I can’t help but think that this will be a fascinating geo-political event to witness.  Both for the Cubans and the Americans.  The potential for Cuba is huge.   What to do, what to do?  His brother Raul is not going to change anything going on in Havana while Fidel is still sucking air that’s for sure.  But the day after his death (and inevitable big assed parade) could stir up almost immediate Cuban demands for change.   At least I sure as hell hope it does.

Santiago Portal holds a sign that reads,

This is a perfect near-term test for the candidates to react to a world event and show how they think to the public.  If the candidates are not asked the pointed question of “How would you respond to the death of Castro?” during the DNC/RNC Presidential Candidate debates we will be shortchanged as a public.

I am eagerly awaiting to hear how Obama, or Clintion, & McCain field this line of questions.  Do we support a democratic revolution?  Do we lift the embargo?  Do we sit on the sidelines an see what the UN screwballs do?  Can I finally go SCUBA diving in Cuba?  Seriously, except for the last point I’d really like to know what they think.  This is a perfect chance to see how the presidential wanna-bes react to events.  They have plenty of time to think about it.  It will happen on their watch, and we must have a position ready.

Alright all you press monkeys, prep your questions and put the guys to the test.
